About Henna Brows

Henna eyebrows are a type of brow tinting used to stain the skin beneath the brow hairs. The aim of this process is to create a shadow, which means it offers an illusion of depth and fullness in the eyebrow area, visually filling any bold spots.

What is Henna?

Henna is a natural dye derived from a plant known as hina or the henna tree. It has been used for dying hair, skin, nails, fabrics and clothes for centuries. The plant contains lawsone, a natural coloring pigment. This natural pigment is perfect for tinting your eyebrows, especially if you have a sensitive skin type.

Have you had any allergic reactions to hydrogen peroxide which is used in other brow dyes? Then, brow henna could be the perfect solution to your problem since no hydrogen is used in henna brow tinting.

Can I Use Normal Henna on Eyebrows?

Yes, you actually can. However, be aware that you might get a reddish shade on your brows and skin. Thus, color pigments are often added to most brow henna products in order to offer that beautiful light to dark brown color range. In addition to this, these color pigments enable henna to penetrate your brows and skin more quickly.

Does Henna Eyebrows Treatment Hurt?

The only possible discomfort you might feel during this treatment may be caused by having your eyebrows waxed. However, since the waxing is mostly done in small sections, there is minimal discomfort and the overall treatment is quite relaxing.

Is the Treatment Safe?

You should be aware that henna powder is not mixed with hydrogen peroxide and therefore, hardly ever causes allergic reactions. However, if you have a sensitive skin, please read the PREPARATION section in order to avoid any discomfort.

Preparation

Are People With Sensitive Skin Suitable Candidates?

If you have never used henna on your hair or skin and have a sensitive skin, it might be a good idea to do a test first. This means you should go to the salon where you are going to get your henna brows before the actual treatment, let them apply a speck of henna on your arm and leave it on for about 15 minutes.

If you do not experience an allergic reaction within 48 hours, it is completely safe to book your first henna brow treatment.

How Can I Prepare for the Procedure?

In addition to the allergy test, it is a good idea to scrub your eyebrows before the henna brow treatment (the evening before the treatment), thus removing dead skin cells and ensuring the brow henna penetrates your skin better.

Henna Treatment

Step 1 Shaping The Brows

Step: 3 Choosing A Suitable Color

Step 1 Shaping The Brows

This step includes threading, waxing or plucking your eyebrows, making them well-shaped beforehand.

Step 2 Cleaning The Skin

Step: 3 Choosing A Suitable Color

Step 1 Shaping The Brows

Removing dirt and dead cells from the skin and eyebrows is of key importance since the cleaner the skin, the longer the henna will stay. Afterwards, the skin around the brows will be well dried. The cleaner and more degreased eyebrows and skin, the better the henna tint can penetrate the skin.

Step: 3 Choosing A Suitable Color

Step: 3 Choosing A Suitable Color

Step: 3 Choosing A Suitable Color

Brow henna is offered in different shades, from blond to dark brown. Discuss with your beauty professional which color would suit you best.

However, you should know that the color might develop differently on different skin types. This is why it is probably best not to go too dark the first time you get brow henna applied. The final decision about the shade should be made by your eyebrow specialist though and, if needed, she/he will mix two colors in order to get the perfect shade.

In addition, you might be offered an ombre effect, which means your eyebrow specialist will color the head of your brows (the front part) using a lighter shade and a darker one for the rest of the brows.

After the color decision, henna powder and water are mixed together to create a paste which is then applied to the brow area. Unlike with other eyebrow tints and dyes, no chemical process, that is no oxidant is necessary before the henna tint is ready for use. In turn this significantly reduces a possibility of an allergic reaction.

Step 4 Applying Brow Henna

Step 6. Removing The Color

Step: 3 Choosing A Suitable Color

Monique will apply brow henna using a special brush, stamping and pressing the henna evenly into the skin. In case you do not wish the full eyebrow look, you could only get your brow hairs dyed avoiding the skin area.

Any irregularities will be removed quite easily and swiftly using a cotton swab possibly with some tint remover. Afterwards, you will be left to relax with a thick layer of henna paste on your eyebrows.

Step 5 Color Development

Step 6. Removing The Color

Step 6. Removing The Color

Brow henna should sit on your brows and skin for at least 20 minutes. The longer the henna absorbs, the deeper it penetrates into the skin and, thus, the longer it lasts. Your beauty professional will decide how long it will sit on your skin and brows depending on your skin type and condition.

Step 6. Removing The Color

Step 6. Removing The Color

Step 6. Removing The Color

f you prefer an ombre effect, let your beautician know and she/he will remove the brow henna from the front part some 5 – 10 minutes before.  Afterwards, your eyebrows will be wiped clean and the brow henna removed.

Aftercare

What Does the Aftercare Involve?

To ensure that henna eyebrows last for as long as possible, it would be a good idea to avoid:

  • Wetting your brows for the first 24 hours after the treatment. During this time the henna is still adhering to the skin and hairs and by leaving it for 24 hours, you are maximizing the length of time your henna brows will last on your skin.
  • Going to the gym or any sport for 24 hours after the treatment. Sweat, just like water, will remove the henna from your skin and hairs.
  • Using a lot of cleansing products on your eyebrows.
  • Applying a lot of cream or oil on the brow area.
  • Exposing the eyebrows to the sun.

To maintain them for as long as possible, you might consider purchasing special brow conditioners and products. It is advisable to consult with your brow artist first.

Fading

Do Henna Brows Fade?

Yes, henna brows fade after 2 – 6 weeks.

To maintain them as long as possible, you should follow the tips listed above, but it also depends on your skin type. Henna brows usually disappear faster on an oily skin. On the other hand, if you have a dry skin, henna eyebrows will last longer on you.

In addition to this, skin conditions like psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema will decrease the duration of henna on your skin. To be as precise as we can, the duration of henna eyebrows differs per person.

Touch Up

Will I Need a Touch Up?

As already said, the henna brow treatment is a semi-permanent one. However, it does give you a couple of weeks off from using makeup products on your eyebrows.

If you would like to reapply the brow henna, book another treatment when you would like to add some additional color to your henna eyebrows. After all, the treatment is quick, efficient and painless.

Effects

What to Expect After Henna Brows Treatment?

The henna brow treatment will give your eyebrows a fuller and defined look which most women get by applying makeup products on their brows. One of the best things about this treatment is that henna eyebrows seem quite natural.

What’s more, you do not have to reapply it after washing your face or taking a swim, since it is not removed as easily as regular makeup products.

Side Effects

Are There Any Side Effects?

The beauty of the henna brow treatment lies in the fact that it is the least invasive, since most ingredients are natural and thus the treatment drastically reduces a possibility of an allergic reaction.

However, the henna brow treatment might cause:

  • Reddish eyebrows and skin,
  • Too dark eyebrows in the first few days,
  • Quick pigment fading (oily skin),
  • Allergic reaction (swollen eyebrows, redness, soreness, itchiness).
